Welcome to shopping in Dutchess County. At the Target in the Poughkeepsie Galleria and the Super Stop and Shop, Laura and encountered this for the first time: shopping carts that you have to pay for.
It took me a while to figure out why I couldn’t use any of these carts. They were in the front of the store, but they are chained together, so you can’t use them.
When we figured out that in order to get a cart in which to place all the stuff you want to buy from the store, you have to pay $0.25.
Or, you can use a hand basket for free and buy less.
The headline quote is courtesy of Laura.
Update: Mom says that you get your quarter back when you return the cart. And aparently, not that many people care about the quarter and still leave the cart out in the parking lot.
How common is this?
